Stop Chasing Your Vaginal pH: Here's What Actually Matters
Over the last few years, vaginal pH has become one of the most talked-about topics in women's health.
Search social media and you'll find countless videos recommending pH test strips, "pH-balancing" washes, and products claiming to restore your body's natural acidity. The message is often the same: if your vaginal pH isn't perfect, neither is your vaginal health.
As a biomedical engineer, I understand why pH has become such a popular talking point. It gives us a number, and numbers feel objective. They make us feel like we can measure whether something is healthy or unhealthy.
But biology is rarely that simple.
Your vaginal pH is important, but it isn't the whole story. In fact, focusing on pH alone can sometimes distract us from the bigger picture: the health of the vaginal microbiome.
Understanding the difference can completely change the way you think about vaginal health.
What is vaginal pH?
Let's start with the basics.
pH is a measurement of how acidic or alkaline something is, using a scale from 0 to 14.
A lower number means something is more acidic, while a higher number means it's more alkaline.
In healthy reproductive-aged women, the vaginal environment is typically acidic, with a pH ranging between approximately 3.8 and 4.5.
That acidity isn't accidental.
It's one of the body's natural defense mechanisms.
An acidic environment makes it more difficult for many harmful bacteria to grow while supporting the beneficial bacteria that help keep the vaginal ecosystem in balance.
But here's what's often left out of the conversation:
Your vagina isn't healthy because it's acidic. It's acidic because of the beneficial bacteria living there.
That's an important distinction.
The real stars of the show: Lactobacillus
If you've ever heard me talk about the vaginal microbiome, you've probably heard me mention Lactobacillus.
These beneficial bacteria are some of the most important organisms living in a healthy vagina.
One of their primary jobs is producing lactic acid, which helps maintain the vagina's naturally acidic environment.
Think of pH as the result, not the cause.
The presence of healthy Lactobacillus populations creates an acidic environment, and that acidic environment helps discourage the overgrowth of organisms associated with conditions like bacterial vaginosis.
This is why simply lowering pH doesn't automatically restore a healthy microbiome.
You have to support the ecosystem that creates that environment in the first place.
Why does vaginal pH change?
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that vaginal pH should stay exactly the same all the time.
In reality, your body is dynamic.
Several completely normal life events can temporarily change vaginal pH.
Semen
Semen is naturally more alkaline than the vaginal environment.
After unprotected sex, vaginal pH often rises temporarily. In most healthy individuals, the vaginal microbiome gradually restores its usual acidity over time.
This temporary shift doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.
It's part of normal physiology.
Menstruation
Menstrual blood also has a higher pH than the vagina.
During your period, it's common for vaginal pH to increase slightly because of prolonged exposure to blood.
Again, this is expected.
Your body is remarkably good at returning to its usual balance after menstruation ends.
Hormonal changes
Estrogen plays an important role in vaginal health.
It helps maintain glycogen within vaginal epithelial cells, providing a food source for Lactobacillus bacteria.
As estrogen levels fluctuate—or decline during menopause—the vaginal microbiome can change as well.
This is one reason postmenopausal women may experience higher vaginal pH and become more susceptible to urinary tract infections or bacterial vaginosis.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics don't distinguish between harmful bacteria and beneficial bacteria.
While they may successfully treat an infection, they can also reduce Lactobacillus populations, making it more difficult for the vaginal microbiome to maintain its normal acidic environment.
This is one reason some women experience recurrent yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis after taking antibiotics.
Can pH tell you if you have an infection?
Not by itself.
This is where I think social media has oversimplified the science.
A higher vaginal pH may be associated with bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis.
However, a normal pH doesn't rule out other conditions.
For example, yeast infections often occur while vaginal pH remains within the normal range.
That's why healthcare providers don't diagnose vaginal conditions based solely on pH.
Instead, they consider symptoms, physical examination, microscopy, laboratory testing, and your overall clinical picture.
A pH strip is a tool—not a diagnosis.
The problem with "pH-balancing" marketing
One phrase you'll see everywhere is "pH-balanced feminine wash."
While it sounds scientific, it's worth asking what that phrase actually means.
The vagina is an internal organ that regulates its own environment through an incredibly sophisticated relationship between hormones, beneficial bacteria, immune function, and vaginal tissue.
You don't "balance" your vaginal pH by washing inside the vagina.
In fact, internal cleansing and douching have been associated with disruption of the vaginal microbiome and are generally not recommended.
The vulva, on the other hand, is external skin.
It can absolutely be cleansed—but cleansing the vulva is very different from trying to alter the vagina's internal chemistry.
Understanding the distinction between vulvar care and vaginal health is one of the most important concepts in women's health.
So should you use vaginal pH test strips?
Sometimes they can be helpful.
For example, if you're experiencing symptoms like unusual discharge or odor, pH testing may provide one piece of information that your healthcare provider considers alongside other findings.
But testing your vaginal pH every week simply to see if you're "healthy" usually isn't necessary.
Your body isn't failing because one measurement fluctuates.
Biology isn't static.
Neither are you.
Focus on the ecosystem, not just the number
One of the reasons I spend so much time talking about the vaginal microbiome is because healthy ecosystems are more resilient than isolated numbers.
Instead of asking,
"How do I lower my vaginal pH?"
A better question might be:
"How do I support the beneficial bacteria that naturally maintain a healthy vaginal environment?"
That means thinking about the bigger picture:

Avoiding unnecessary douching or harsh intimate products

Supporting beneficial bacteria when appropriate

Wearing breathable clothing when possible

Seeking evaluation when symptoms persist

Understanding that recurrent infections often involve the microbiome—not just pH
When we focus on supporting the system instead of chasing a single measurement, we move closer to how the body actually works.
The bottom line
Vaginal pH is an important indicator of the vaginal environment—but it is only one piece of a much larger story.
The real foundation of vaginal health isn't a number on a pH strip. It's a balanced microbiome, healthy vaginal tissue, hormonal influences, and the beneficial bacteria that work together to protect the body every day.
As women, we've been taught to look for quick fixes and simple answers. But biology is wonderfully complex.
Instead of trying to force your body into a perfect number, focus on understanding how your body works.
Because when you understand the science behind your health, you're better equipped to care for it with confidence—not fear.
