Why you keep getting symptoms right before your period

Why you keep getting symptoms right before your period

If you’ve ever noticed a pattern like this:

Everything feels fine… and then a few days before your period, something shifts.

Maybe it’s:

  • irritation
  • odor
  • discharge changes
  • itching
  • a mild “off” feeling that sometimes turns into BV or a yeast infection

And then your period comes — and it either gets worse or resets.

This is one of the most common patterns I see, and it’s often misunderstood.

Because it’s not random.

It’s hormonal.

Let’s break down what’s actually happening in your body during this phase — and why your vaginal microbiome becomes more vulnerable right before your period.

First: Understanding the Luteal Phase

The time right before your period is called the luteal phase.

This is the phase after ovulation and before menstruation.

During this time:

  • Progesterone rises
  • Estrogen begins to drop

And that hormonal shift changes everything — including your vaginal environment.

How Hormones Affect Your Vaginal Microbiome

Estrogen plays a major role in keeping your vaginal microbiome stable.

It stimulates the production of glycogen in vaginal cells.

Glycogen is then broken down into glucose — which feeds Lactobacillus, the beneficial bacteria that:

  • Maintain an acidic pH
  • Protect against infections
  • Keep harmful bacteria and yeast in check

So the chain looks like this:

Estrogen → glycogen → Lactobacillus → protection

What Happens Right Before Your Period

During the luteal phase:

  • Estrogen drops
  • Glycogen production decreases
  • Lactobacillus loses its fuel

When Lactobacillus levels drop:

  • Vaginal pH rises
  • The environment becomes less acidic
  • Harmful bacteria and yeast have an easier time growing

This creates a temporary window of vulnerability.

For some women, this shows up as mild symptoms.

For others, it triggers full infections.

Why You Might Notice Symptoms at This Time

This shift can lead to:

1. BV Flares

As pH rises, anaerobic bacteria can overgrow.

You may notice:

  • odor (especially stronger or fishy)
  • thinner discharge
  • symptoms that worsen after sex

2. Yeast Flares

Even though yeast thrives in slightly different conditions, hormonal shifts and immune changes can still trigger overgrowth.

You may notice:

  • itching
  • irritation
  • thicker discharge

3. General “Off” Feeling

Not every imbalance becomes a full infection.

Sometimes it’s just:

  • sensitivity
  • increased discharge
  • mild irritation

This is your microbiome shifting — not necessarily a full diagnosis.

Your Immune System Also Changes

Right before your period, your immune system becomes slightly less active.

This is a natural biological process.

But it means:

  • your body is less efficient at controlling microbial shifts
  • bacteria and yeast have more opportunity to grow

So now you have:

  • lower estrogen
  • less Lactobacillus
  • higher pH
  • reduced immune defense

All at the same time.

Why This Pattern Keeps Repeating

If your baseline microbiome is already slightly off, this monthly shift can push you over the edge every cycle.

So instead of:
“random infections”

What’s actually happening is:
“predictable hormonal vulnerability”

Your body goes through the same hormonal pattern every month — so your symptoms follow that pattern too.

The Period Itself Can Add Another Layer

When your period starts:

  • Blood raises vaginal pH
  • Moisture increases
  • Products (pads/tampons) may create irritation

For some women:

  • symptoms improve after bleeding begins

For others:

  • symptoms worsen or continue

It depends on how your microbiome responds to these changes.

How to Support Your Body During This Phase

This is where you shift from reacting to symptoms to preparing for them.

1. Support Lactobacillus Before Symptoms Start

Don’t wait until you feel off.

If you know your pattern, start supporting your microbiome in the days leading up to your period.

  • Consider probiotics (oral and/or vaginal)
  • Be consistent month to month

This helps buffer the drop in Lactobacillus.

2. Be More Mindful Around Sex

Since pH is already more vulnerable:

  • semen can raise pH further
  • symptoms may be triggered more easily

You don’t need to avoid sex — just be aware:

  • urinate after
  • stay hydrated
  • support your microbiome proactively

3. Reduce Additional Stressors

During this window, your body is already more sensitive.

Try to avoid:

  • harsh or scented products
  • over-cleansing
  • tight, non-breathable clothing

Keep things simple.

4. Support Hormonal Balance

Even though this is a natural phase, overall hormonal health still matters.

Focus on:

  • sleep
  • stress management
  • balanced nutrition

High cortisol can further suppress estrogen, making this phase more intens

5. Pay Attention to Patterns

Start tracking:

  • When symptoms begin
  • How long they last
  • What they feel like

This helps you anticipate and support your body instead of reacting every month

When It’s More Than Just Hormones

If your symptoms:

  • turn into full infections every cycle
  • don’t resolve after your period
  • are severe or worsening

There may be deeper factors involved:

  • biofilms
  • chronic microbiome imbalance
  • gut dysbiosis
  • hormonal conditions like PCOS

At that point, a more targeted approach is needed.

Symptoms right before your period are not random.

They’re the result of:

  • hormonal shifts
  • decreased Lactobacillus
  • increased pH
  • temporary immune changes

Your body becomes more vulnerable during this phase — and if your microbiome isn’t fully supported, symptoms can show up consistently.

The goal isn’t to fight your cycle.

It’s to understand it.

Because once you recognize the pattern, you can support your body before symptoms start — and that’s what changes everything.
